Mounting Air Compressors

5/27/2014

One of the most common questions we receive from people installing an Air Lift on-board air compressor system is, “where should I mount my compressor?” It’s a good question. People want to make sure they mount the compressor in the best location to ensure reliability and long life.

The most popular first choice is under the hood in the engine compartment. The thought behind this choice is that it will be protected from the weather and road debris. However, the truth of the matter is that mounting the compressor under the hood is the last place you want to put it.

First, there is usually not enough room to mount it. Today’s high tech engines take up all the room in the engine compartment.

Second, the compressor won’t live as long under the hood because there is too much heat. The heat in the engine compartment prevents the compressor from getting enough air to keep cool and if the compressor gets too hot, it’s life can be shortened significantly. We want the compressor mounted where it can get a steady flow of air.

The preferred location for mounting air compressors is on the inside of the frame rail under the vehicle. There is plenty of air flow to keep the compressor cool and the compressor itself is sufficiently protected from the elements. A little water splashed on the compressor won’t hurt it. From this location it’s a lot easier to mount and to route air lines and wiring.

While the air compressor can be mounted in any orientation, the manifold (included with WirelessAIR, WirelessONE, and Air Lift Performance kits) should NOT be mounted upside down.
